Ever since the beginning of the Corona pandemic in 2019, everyone is trying to adjust in this ‘new normal’ environment, with more and more social distancing, frequent hand washing, mandatory face mask/face shield, and other PPE equipment. However, the relevance effectiveness of PPE kit, safety gloves have been the focus of debate for many. Safety gloves are the crucial component of the PPE kit. There are mainly three types of safety gloves- vinyl, latex and Nitrile, which are used in different applications and industries. These safety gloves play a significant role in protecting the users from chemicals, sharp objects, rough working and temperature extremes. In this post, I will be talking about the ‘facts and myths’ surrounding safety gloves, which we all should be knowing before buying the pair. Myth1# All gloves work in the same way.

Depending upon the polymeric material structure, all the disposable gloves do not provide equal protection in all applications.  Nitrile gloves offer better puncture resistance and save hands from chemicals, oils and solvents. Gloves made of Latex material have a better fitting, tear resistance, and dexterity. Whereas, Vinyl gloves offer the best electrostatic dissipation properties and resist harsh chemicals like sulfuric acid better than Nitrile or latex.

Myth 2# Cheap gloves are cost-effective.

Irrespective of price, the buyer needs to consider various factors like risk, quality, durability and usage in the application. Unformulated or unprocessed gloves do not provide full protection and not last long. Lower quality gloves can fail, cause injury, and lead to workplace mishap.

Myth3 # Gloves offers 100% protection to the users.

Not! It is the general misconception that gloves provide 100% protection to the hand. These gloves can have holes, slit, tears, and abrasions that are invisible from naked eyes. Simply put, these safety gloves, even Nitrile gloves, can swell and develop spots.

Fact# Gloves do not offer full protection to the users as they degrade after use.

Myths4 # More texture provides better grip to the users.

You might be surprised to know that texture has very little influence on gripping. The safety gloves made with rubber and polyisoprene material provide best grips, while vinyl gloves offer moderate gripping. Surface treatment and coating can add an extra level on gloves, and it can determine the grip level of it.

Myth5# Thicker gloves are strong.

It is another misconception. Thicker gloves can give you a false sense of security. It may deceive you if it has been made with cheap material. Cheap glove fillers like silica, chalk, carbon black can be toxic for the wearer.
