How to maintain bearings?

Bearings are widely used to reduce friction and loss of power in machines. In mechanical parlance, bearings are described as components used between two parts to facilitate linear or rotational movement, thereby minimizing friction and ensuring superior performance.

Bearings play a significant role in the unrestricted movement of mechanical parts in car wheels, skateboards, and many more.  The longevity of bearings is dependent on factors such as the bearing type, the load they are made to carry, and the maintenance schedule. Proper routine maintenance of bearings can enhance the life of bearings and reduce the downtime as well.

For a longer lifespan of bearings, follow tips listed below:

a) Handle bearings carefully: It is essential to store bearings horizontally in a clean and dry place . Make sure you stop the contamination of bearings from airborne dust particles. Do not try to pound them or put extra force on the outer rim of the bearings. Never tamper or remove the packaging of the bearings. Unpack the bearings only when you intend to use them.

b) Periodic Check of bearing housing and shaft:  It is mandatory to check bearing housing and shaft when the bearing is being used for mounting so that damage, if any, can be reported and rectified. Make sure to use a clean cloth to clean bearing surface so that nicks or burrs are removed completely.

c) Proper mounting of bearings: Cylindrical bearings should be mounted through a press fit method whereas bearings with tapered bores can be easily mounted by using tapered sleeves.

d) Do not preheat or overheat the bearings: Bearings may get damaged when heated by beyond the temperature threshold. Overheating can disfigure or deform the bearing steel and reduce the load carrying capacity. Use induction heaters to heat the bearings and avoid using an open fire.

e) Keep bearings safe from corrosion: Always keep bearings away from water and use gloves while handling them. Bearings, when exposed to water, can get corroded and fail.

f) Proper lubrication of bearings: Bearings need proper lubrication for extra longevity and smooth operation. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to use the right lubrication for bearings.
